Township of Washington, N.J. (June 16, 2016) – The OritaniBank Charitable Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the St. Joseph’s School for the Blind, located in Jersey City. Its mission is to serve the needs of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. It provides a continuum of services from birth through adulthood.

The grant will specifically benefit its Early Intervention Program (EIP) that provides educational services for children with visual impairment from birth through the age of three. This program offers a minimum of four hours of service per month per child and helps the child learn to use their other senses to understand the world around them.

“No child should be excluded from a chance at a proper education,” said Kevin J. Lynch, President of the OritaniBank Charitable Foundation and Chairman, President and CEO of Oritani Bank. “We are proud to support the Early Intervention Program at St. Joseph’s School for the Blind, where each and every child will receive the attention and education they deserve.”
“This generous donation will be used toward expanding services and community resources for the children and families participating in EIP,” said Maria Malapoe-Streko, Director of St. Joseph’s Early Intervention Program. “Our wide array of activities programs, and educational workshops provide enhanced instruction for the children and social & emotional support families need within the community. St. Joseph’s Early Intervention Program is a direct service provider offering the greatest opportunity for infants & toddlers to develop to their greatest potential.”
The Early Intervention Program has provided service to more than 85 infants/toddlers with visual impairments. In addition, their parents/caregivers have also received instruction through the program. The grand provided by the OritaniBank Charitable Foundation will provide the needed resources to continue to expand service throughout the region and provide critical care to infants with special needs, along with providing further investment to the EIP.
